New Delhi, Feb 17: The Supreme Court on Monday expressed strong displeasure over the absence of Centre’s legal representatives during a crucial hearing of a case filed by the West Bengal government. The court urged the central authorities to show more respect and responsibility when dealing with intergovernmental disputes.
A bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih noted the lack of presence from the Centre’s legal team when the matter was called for hearing. The bench observed that such absences reflect poorly, especially in cases involving disputes between a state and the Union.
“Somebody should be here. This is showing no courtesy to the court. There are so many law officers,” Justice Gavai remarked, clearly irked by the situation.
The bench acknowledged the explanation but reiterated the need for adequate representation in such significant matters. “Show some courtesy to the court. It is a dispute between a state and the Union,” Justice Gavai said, further pointing out the availability of several senior lawyers who could have stepped in.
The case was eventually deferred following the request of the lawyer present.
