Maa Canteen has emerged as a crucial initiative, ensuring food security for thousands of underprivileged citizens across West Bengal. Launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee before the 2021 assembly elections, this welfare scheme provides nutritious meals at a nominal cost of just Rs. 5 per plate. Currently, Maa Canteen operates in 33 district hospitals as well as in municipal and corporation areas, offering a much-needed relief to those struggling with financial hardships.
Innovative Distribution and Expansion
Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have adopted various strategies to expand the reach of this program. According to Minister Firhad Hakim, special distribution methods have been introduced in slum areas, market complexes, hospitals, bus stands, and railway stations. Some municipalities have even started offering lunch packets directly to those in need.
A key aspect of this program is the involvement of women-led self-help groups, which not only ensures smooth operations but also empowers women by increasing workforce participation.
Ensuring Food Security for the Poor and Migrants
Maa Canteen plays a vital role in supporting daily wage workers, migrants, and low-income families, especially those affected by salary cuts and job losses during the pandemic. A dedicated online portal has been developed to monitor real-time performance, ensuring efficiency and transparency in operations.
This welfare initiative is built on three pillars—strong administrative support, skilled project management, and active public participation.
How Maa Canteen Works
The scheme was officially launched on February 15, 2021, with the goal of providing high-quality cooked meals at minimal cost to urban poor communities. While each meal is priced at Rs. 5 for citizens, the state government subsidizes an additional Rs. 10 per plate.
By making affordable and nutritious meals accessible to all, Maa Canteen has become a cornerstone of West Bengal’s social welfare programs, ensuring that no one goes hungry in urban areas.
