Kolkata/Digha: In a historic move that is set to redefine West Bengal’s spiritual and cultural landscape, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced the construction of the state’s own Jagannath Temple in Digha. This grand initiative aims to provide a closer and equally magnificent place of worship for Lord Jagannath’s devotees, making Bengal a major pilgrimage destination alongside Odisha’s famous Puri temple.
For centuries, millions of Bengalis have journeyed to Puri’s Jagannath Temple, considering it one of the holiest sites in Hinduism. Now, with Mamata Banerjee’s vision, Digha will be home to an awe-inspiring temple dedicated to the Lord of the Universe, ensuring that devotees no longer have to travel far to seek blessings.
The proposed temple will be a stunning blend of Bengal’s terracotta artistry and the grandeur of Odisha’s Kalinga architecture. Standing tall at 120 feet, the temple will house an intricately carved idol of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, sculpted by Bengal’s finest artisans.
Key highlights of the project include:
A massive temple complex spanning 30 acres, featuring gardens, meditation centers, and cultural corridors.
A grand Rath Yatra festival, mirroring the world-famous Puri procession, drawing lakhs of devotees annually.
A pilgrimage-friendly township, complete with hotels, rest houses, and a cultural heritage museum.
Eco-friendly and sustainable construction, powered by solar energy and green initiatives.
Speaking about the project, CM Mamata Banerjee said, “Lord Jagannath belongs to all, and Bengal has deep-rooted devotion towards Him. This temple will not only be a place of worship but also a beacon of Bengal’s cultural pride, tourism, and economic development.”
Beyond faith, the Jagannath Temple in Digha is expected to be a game-changer for Bengal’s tourism industry. With improved roadways, direct railway connectivity, and enhanced infrastructure, the government is projecting a 50% rise in tourist footfall in Digha within the next five years.
Local businesses, hotels, transport services, and artisans are expected to benefit immensely from the temple’s construction. Experts believe this project will generate thousands of employment opportunities, strengthening the local economy while preserving Bengal’s spiritual heritage.
