Girish Park Chaos: Kolkata Turns Battleground Ahead of PM Modi’s Brigade Rally

Kolkata witnessed high tension and political violence at Girish Park on Saturday, shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-awaited rally at the Brigade Parade Ground. Even before the Prime Minister reached the venue, the area around state minister Shashi Panja’s residence turned into a virtual battleground, with clashes reported between BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers.

According to reports, several BJP workers were injured and bloodied in the confrontation. The streets of Girish Park were strewn with broken glass and debris as the situation quickly spiralled out of control.

What Triggered the Clash?

As per BJP’s version of events, a bus carrying their party workers and supporters from North Kolkata to the Brigade rally became the target of an attack near state minister Shashi Panja’s residence.

The bus was reportedly led by BJP leader Tamoghna Ghosh. BJP workers allege that a group of TMC supporters launched an attack on the vehicle right in front of Panja’s house.

They claim that:

  • The bus was heavily vandalised
  • Doors, windows, and glass panes were smashed
  • Several BJP workers sustained head injuries

Some of the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Visuals from the spot showed broken glass scattered across the road and damage to multiple vehicles.

TMC’s Counter-Claim

While the BJP accuses TMC workers of attacking their bus and supporters, the Trinamool Congress has presented a completely different account.

According to TMC, it was BJP supporters who first provoked the incident:

  • TMC alleges that BJP workers hurled bricks at Shashi Panja’s residence
  • In response, TMC supporters claim they retaliated and chased the attackers away

State minister Shashi Panja herself came forward with a sharp rebuttal. She alleged that:

“The BJP goons who are going to the Brigade rally have buses loaded with bricks, bottles, and even bombs. They vandalised the gate of my residence at Girish Park.”

This directly contradicted the BJP’s claim that they were travelling peacefully and were suddenly ambushed.

Ground Situation at Girish Park

The aftermath of the clash turned Girish Park into a tense zone:

  • Broken glass lay scattered across the stretch of road
  • More than one vehicle had its windows smashed
  • The Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed to bring the situation under control
  • Even the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bowbazar police station was reportedly injured while trying to manage the situation

An injured BJP worker described the attack, saying:

“They smashed the glass of our bus. They beat us up. They are very dangerous. We were travelling peacefully towards the Brigade when they started pelting stones and bricks at our bus. Even bikes were vandalised.”

His comments highlighted the fear and chaos among BJP supporters who were en route to attend the Prime Minister’s rally.

Political Tension Ahead of Modi’s Rally

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Brigade rally has been a major political event in Bengal’s election season, with both the BJP and TMC trying to demonstrate strength on the ground.

The incident at Girish Park, occurring just ahead of Modi’s arrival at Brigade, has further intensified the already charged political atmosphere in Kolkata and across the state.

Both parties are now using the clash to mount fresh attacks on each other:

  • BJP is accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of orchestrating violence to intimidate opposition workers and disrupt mobilization for the rally.
  • TMC is countering that BJP cadres are coming armed and are themselves provoking violence by attacking homes and properties of Trinamool leaders.

With accusations and counter-accusations flying, the Girish Park clash has become yet another flashpoint in the bitter political battle between the BJP and TMC in West Bengal.

Law and Order Concerns

The deployment of RAF and the injury of a police officer underscore the seriousness of the situation. As election-related activities pick up pace, incidents like this raise crucial questions:

  • Can political rallies be conducted peacefully in such a polarized environment?
  • Are party workers being adequately restrained by their leaderships?
  • Is law enforcement equipped and empowered enough to ensure neutrality and control?

For citizens of Kolkata, Girish Park was not just a location on the map today – it was a reminder of how quickly political rivalry can spill onto the streets and affect everyday life.

As the day progresses and Prime Minister Modi addresses his supporters at Brigade, all eyes will remain on the streets of Kolkata, especially sensitive areas like Girish Park, to see whether the situation calms down or further tensions erupt.
