Advanced Liver Research Centre Opened in Sonarpur

The widow of US philanthropist John C. Martin, who donated $7.5 million to a hospital in Sonarpur, visited the facility three years after his passing for the opening of the John C. Martin Centre for Liver Research and Innovations. The center will focus on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, its precursor stages, and drug-induced liver damage.

Lilian Lou, a scientist and Martin’s widow, attended the inauguration at the Indian Institute of Liver and Digestive Sciences, a 100-bed hospital funded entirely by donations.

A portion of the $7.5 million donation will be allocated over the next six years, with some already used for initial infrastructure.
