Apple Gears Up to Launch Entry-Level MacBook Priced Around ₹55,000 in India

In a strategic shift to reach a broader audience, Apple is reportedly developing a budget-friendly MacBook, potentially priced around ₹55,000 (≈ US $600) in India, according to a report by Bloomberg and carried in a recent coverage by NDTV Profit.

Codenamed “J700”, the device is currently in active testing and early production. The new model is expected to feature components positioned below the standard MacBook Air lineup – for example, using an iPhone-series chip rather than the premium Apple silicon in higher-end laptops, and a smaller or lower-resolution display to cut costs.

Apple’s motive appears clear: capture entry-level laptop buyers, including students, budget-conscious professionals and users looking for a macOS experience without premium pricing. The report speculates that the machine could arrive in the first half of 2026, subject to production ramp-up and supply-chain readiness.

Industry analysts say this move could increase Mac penetration in emerging markets such as India, and challenge lower-cost Chromebooks and Windows laptops. With India’s laptop market growing and educational/tier-2/tier-3 demand rising, the timing may be opportune. However, margins may be tight if Apple maintains its premium brand positioning.

For Indian consumers, the new model may offer the full macOS ecosystem – apps, updates, and service access – at an unprecedented price point. But customers should note that reduced pricing may come via compromises on build quality, screen resolution or processor performance, as suggested by early leaks.

As always with Apple-rumoured products, official confirmation is awaited. But if the reports hold true, the new MacBook could democratise access to the Mac line in India, creating a new value tier for the brand.
