Bengali is the Only Indian Language on New York’s Ballot Papers

New York, home to over 200 spoken languages, is often called America’s melting pot. Yet, for the U.S. presidential elections, the ballot will include only four additional languages besides English. Among them, Bengali represents the Indian languages.

“We are required to provide ballots in four other languages besides English, which are Chinese, Spanish, Korean and Bengali,” says Michael J. Ryan, Executive Director of the NYC Board of Elections.

The Bengali-speaking community, primarily from India and Bangladesh, is set to benefit from this inclusion, which is expected to increase voter engagement within the group.
