On Thursday, Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee launched a groundbreaking 75-day free health camp initiative, Sebaashray, a first of its kind in India. “This is the first time any public representative has organized such an initiative. We will conduct 300 health camps across seven Assembly constituencies (ACs), 71 Gram Panchayats and 93 wards in Diamond Harbour,” Banerjee said.
In DH AC, 40 camps have been arranged, with one model camp and 39 regular camps, which will be replicated in other ACs. The camps will feature registration desks, doctor chambers, restrooms, treatment areas and a pharmacy offering free medicines. “This unprecedented initiative brings together 1,200-1,400 doctors. It’s about real service, not just election-time gestures,” Banerjee added.
Each camp will serve 6,000-7,000 people and the program aims to provide free healthcare to over 23 lakh people. “This initiative will set an example for the nation. While my primary duty is to DH, I consider all of Bengal as my family and I will support other representatives who want to do the same,” he stated.
From January 2-11, 41 camps will be held in DH AC, followed by 40-41 camps in Falta AC from January 12-21, 47 camps in Bishnupur AC from January 22-31 and more in other ACs until March 13. Patients may be referred to 12 hospitals and Banerjee will personally oversee the camps.
