India Women Clinch First-Ever ODI World Cup Title, Defeat South Africa by 52 Runs

In a momentous breakthrough for Indian sport, the India women’s cricket team captured their first ICC Women’s ODI World Cup title with a commanding 52-run victory over South Africa in the final at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on 2 November 2025.

Batting first, India posted a formidable 298 for 7, powered by a standout opening knock of 87 by Shafali Verma and a solid 58 from Deepti Sharma. Verma also chipped in with two crucial wickets, while Sharma turned the tide with a match-winning 5 for 39.

South Africa started their chase with promise, led by a century from Laura Wolvaardt (101), yet they were bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs as India’s bowlers executed brilliantly when it mattered most.

The triumph ends decades of near-misses. Having lost finals in 2005 and 2017, this edition finally saw the Indian women convert their talent into the ultimate prize. Head coach Amol Muzumdar and captain Harmanpreet Kaur celebrated alongside thousands of jubilant fans at the stadium and millions more watching across the country.

This win is more than just a sporting victory. It underscores the rising stature of women’s cricket in India, the impact of increased investment and visibility, and the shift in public sentiment toward recognising female athletes. For millions of young girls watching tonight, this will become a defining moment: theirs is now a blueprint for success.
