Legendary Theatre Personality Manoj Mitra Passes Away

Veteran Bengali actor and renowned theatre personality Manoj Mitra(85) passed away on Tuesday morning around 8:50 a.m. at a hospital in Kolkata’s Salt Lake. Mitra had been admitted for breathing difficulties and other age-related health issues.

Mitra was celebrated for his roles in films like Tapan Sinha’s Banchharamer Bagan and Satyajit Ray’s acclaimed classics Ghare Baire and Ganashatru. He also worked with notable directors such as Basu Chatterjee, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, and Tarun Majumdar. In addition to his acting career, Mitra was a prolific playwright, having written over 100 plays. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Best Playwright in 1985, along with numerous other honors.
