A BJP leader from Tamluk, stronghold of opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari was arrested for fraud, sparking a major controversy. Navarun Nayek, the state general secretary of BJP and his wife Tanushree were accused of defrauding over ₹1.5 crore through fake tenders. They were arrested after a written complaint led to an investigation proving the fraud. Notably, Navarun happens to be a close associate of Suvendu and MP Abhijit Ganguly as well.
Police sources suggest a larger racket involving others, including individuals from Assam. The couple allegedly took ₹1.6 crore from contractors Bishwajit Dutta and Bhaskar Mondal by promising tenders for blanket supplies.
Apparently, during the fourth phase of interrogations, these inconsistencies were revealed, leading to the couple’s arrest. Navarun had previously claimed the allegations were false. After the arrests, Trinamool Congress raised the issue with Asit Bandopadhyay calling for a thorough investigation, stating, “We had already said that the BJP is full of extortionists.”
