On Monday, the Supreme Court remarked that reservations cannot be based on religion, while hearing a series of petitions challenging the Calcutta High Court’s decision that annulled the OBC status of several castes in West Bengal that had been granted since 2010. The petitions, including one filed by the West Bengal government, were presented for hearing before a bench of Justices B. R. Gavai and K. V. Viswanathan. “Religion cannot be the basis for reservation,” Justice Gavai stated.
