The West Bengal Government Moved the Calcutta High Court Seeking Death Penalty for Sanjoy Roy

The West Bengal government on Tuesday moved the Calcutta High Court seeking the death penalty for Sanjoy Roy, who was convicted in the R G Kar rape and murder case, after the Sealdah court on Monday sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The victim’s father told media persons, “Let us get the order copy tomorrow, we will go through it and then decide what we want to do. She (Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) does not have to do anything in a hurried manner. Whatever the Chief Minister has done till date, she should not do any further.”

Saying that the life imprisonment order was given because the CBI “could not provide proper proof”, the father said, “She can say a lot of things, but she only tampered with evidence… the then CP and others, they had tampered with it. Could she not see all that from the beginning?”

State Advocate General Kishore Dutta mentioned the state government’s challenge to Justice Debangshu Basak’s division bench, and the court has allowed it to be filed.
