The state urban development department has approved ₹7.2 crore to build an embankment along the Goborjyoti river in Jaigaon, on the India-Bhutan border.
“Annual landslides and rainfall in Bhutan send debris into the river, causing flooding and erosion, damaging land and properties. The embankment will address these issues,” said Ganga Prasad Sharma, chairman of the Jaigaon Development Authority (JDA).
The funds will also be used for pavers on two major roads. “We hope to complete the work before the next monsoon,” Sharma added.
Jaigaon, near Bhutan’s commercial capital Phuentsholing, is a key road gateway into Bhutan.
Residents also face silt deposition after floods, causing property damage. “People must clear debris once the water recedes,” said tourism professional Suresh Thakuri.
Landslides near Bhutan hills also impact Jaigaon, requiring financial aid from the JDA.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has addressed the issue of rivers descending from Bhutan. A resolution was passed to form a joint river commission with Bhutan. “We will raise the issue with the Centre,” said Alipurduar MLA Suman Kanjilal.
