In a celebratory gesture, the Bengal footballers who triumphed in the 2024 Santosh Trophy were appointed as assistant sub-inspectors in the Kolkata Police, a move announced by state sports minister Aroop Biswas during a felicitation event in Kolkata on Wednesday.
Following their historic win, the Bengal team was presented with Rs 50 lakh and job offers were made to all 22 players by CM Mamata Banerjee herself. The state government also stressed the need to boost the representation of Bengali footballers in the national team, with a particular focus on nurturing local talent through the Kolkata League.
Head coach Sanjoy Sen attributed their victory to their integrity and commitment. Recognized by the Indian Football Association for his coaching excellence, Sen is set to launch a new junior academy aimed at developing young talent in Bengal.
